Medical Device Design (MDD) requires strict adherence to standards and regulations as well as impeccable documentation. Working with our partners, IDA has extensive experience in device development including research and development involving the commercialisation of new technologies. IDA have the capability to produce complex mock-ups and test rigs to validate concepts and ideas, as well as performing experiments and scoping studies to qualify designs along all steps of the design process. We also have particular experience in taking patent ideas and developing them into a commercial product.

With 30 years of Design Consultancy experience we have been entrenched in the design of consumer electronics for some of the world’s leading brands. We understand that consumers vary widely the world over, so the first step in our process is to understand who the consumer is. Will they be wearing gloves when using the product or will they be a super tech savvy teenager? Will it be carried in a toolbox or be thrown into the kitchens third draw? We ask the right questions at the start so that the end product will be right for the market.

Working closely with engineers for large commercial products such as air-conditioners or commercial refrigerators, we ensure that functional requirements are maintained while an edge in the market place is gained through simple improvements in styling and user interface. Today, products like these need to have on shelf buyer appeal, even if they won’t be in the public eye during their life cycle.

Prototyping is an integral part in product development and something that is second nature to us. Getting out from behind the screen and physically prototyping ideas is a proven method to validate ideas and ensure success. IDA has extensive in-house and external prototyping facilities, and can prototype short production runs for  market evaluation. We use the latest 3D printing technologies in-house to quickly iterate design ideas and shorten lead times.

IDA can perform scoping experiments and provide written reports to validate systems for medical device development. This helps to ensure compliance later in the development process. We can provide all levels of prototyping from quick form models to test ergonomics, appearance models for marketing buy-in, and, with our partners, fully working prototypes to test product function.

IDA uses the latest CAD systems to produce CAD data and documentation to a level suitable for hand-off to a manufacturer.  Thorough design documentation ensures that the design intent of the chosen concept is maintained, and errors are eliminated as a project transitions into the manufacturing phase. IDA’s designers and engineers  ensure our designs meet manufacturing and cost requirements, and that detail issues are resolved. We specialise in the detailing of plastic injection moulded parts but have experience in other processes, such as Sheetmetal and CNC production techniques.

Using our network of partners, IDA can help source suppliers of specialised components and manufacturers both on and off-shore. We can assist the production process by evaluating suppliers, ongoing support including DFM, CAD modification, off-tool part verification and supplier liaison during the production process.
